SMP 72: Raw milk, Indignieous cultures & the importance of traditional diets
Today we are speaking to Sally Fallon Morell. Who is the President of the Weston A. Price Foundation. This foundation is based on the principles of Dr. Weston A. Price who believed that eating real, whole, natural foods the way our ancestors did is the key to health.
Sally lives in Brandywine, Maryland on a dairy farm of grass fed animals. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in English with honors from Stanford and a Masters Degree in English with high honors from UCLA. She is the author of the best-selling nutritional cookbook Nourishing Traditions. She is also the author of other Nourishing titles including Nourishing Broth.
We were surprised to actually get to speak with the President when we contacted the Weston A. Price Foundation, but Sally explained that they are a small organization with over 500 chapters around the world. The chapters help people find the foods that the foundation recommends. Things like raw milk, grass-fed butter, meat with the fat on it, meat broths, and fermented foods.
Sally read Dr. Prices book in the 1970’s, and it was life changing. She began raising her kids following the principles outlined by Dr. Price. In 1990, she started writing Nourishing Traditions. It eventually became a phenomenon. In 1999, she founded the Weston A. Price Foundation and also a campaign for real milk.
Some surprising guidelines are that we need fat and salt. Ancient cultures weren’t vegetarian, they were heavily meat based. Lean meat is not ideal, we need the fat for health. In ancient cultures, it was most valued and eaten with the meat. Scientifically, the fat prevents our bodies from running out of vitamin A when eating protein, and fat makes food easier to digest.
Today’s topics include:
- How it is easier now to get grass-fed butter and pastured eggs
- The origins of Sally founding the Weston A. Price Foundation
- How government recommendations were making people unhealthy and obese
- What to eat according to the guidelines of the foundation
- Higher saturated fat consumption corresponds with lower rates of heart disease

A big focus for the foundation is food for children and pregnant women. These were nutrient, dense high-fat foods. Modern studies show one in two children has some sort of developmental delay. Having a proper nutrient rich diet will solve this.
“I wanted to do a cookbook that put Dr. Price’s findings in practical form” Sally
“We’ve managed to offend almost everybody with our dietary advice” Sally
“The FDA is all about drugs…raw milk would be a big decline in the use of antibiotics in animals” Sally
