Who is Joe De Sena?

Joe De Sena is the CEO and co-founder of the Spartan Race and infamous Death Race. Growing up in Howard Beach, Queens, a territory that was controlled by the infamous Mafia Don, John Gotti, he was surrounded by daily scenes of what was portrayed in the movie Goodfella’s.

At the age of 25 Joe started a journey in finance on the cutthroat avenues of Wall Street. [1]

On Wall Street, De Sena worked as an equities and derivatives trader and after putting on weight engaged in various outdoor activities ranging from multiple IronMan races, to the Iditarod by foot . In early 2000, De Sena moved his family to Pittsfield, Vermont to operate a farm, a bed and breakfast, and a general store for hikers. In his spare time, De Sena competes in gruelling athletic events like the Ironman and the Furnace Creek 508 Bike Race.

In 2005, De Sena met Andy Weinberg and they decided to develop a new series of obstacle course races. They designed a 24-hour physical and psychological event which they dubbed “The Death Race“.

After the fourth annual Death Race, De Sena was pressured to create an event that would be available to the masses, and not just the elite Death Race crowd. This new venture became the popular obstacle race series known as Spartan Race
